There WAS a reason to pay attention to Cumberland. For the past two days we have taken breaks from the Interstate by driving west on Route 40, no trucks, at times no traffic besides us. And lots of small towns to see along the way. That it was called National Road and ran right next to the Interstate indicated an old route, but this morning, at the Cumberland rest area in Illinois, we learned what an important one.
